Number to Words Converter FAQ

How do I write a number in words?

Enter the number and select Standard mode. Example: 1,234 converts to 'one thousand two hundred thirty-four'.

How do I write a check amount in words?

Use Check-writing mode. It produces the formal bank format, like 'One hundred twenty-three and 45/100 dollars'.

What is ordinal mode?

Ordinal mode converts numbers to positional words: 1 → first, 2 → second, 3 → third, 42 → forty-second.

What currencies are supported?

USD (dollars and cents), EUR (euros and cents), GBP (pounds and pence), and JPY (yen with no decimal subdivision).

How large a number is supported?

Up to vigintillions (10^63). Numbers beyond that are not representable in standard English naming.

Can I convert decimal numbers?

Yes. Decimals are handled naturally. In standard mode, '3.14' becomes 'three point one four'. In currency mode, the decimal is treated as cents or pence.

Can I convert negative numbers?

Yes. Negative numbers are prefixed with 'negative' in standard and ordinal modes.

Why would I need to write a number in words?

Legal documents, contracts, bank checks, invoices, and educational materials often require numbers spelled out in full to prevent ambiguity or fraud.

Does it support British or American English?

The tool uses American English conventions (no 'and' between thousands and hundreds in standard mode).

Is any data sent to a server?

No. All conversions run entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Background

Convert any number into its English word representation instantly. Supports integers from negative vigintillions to positive vigintillions (10^63), decimal numbers, and currency formats. Standard mode spells out the full number in words. Currency mode formats the amount for USD (dollars and cents), EUR (euros and cents), GBP (pounds and pence), and JPY (yen). Ordinal mode converts numbers to positional words — 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 42nd. Check-writing mode produces the formal format used on bank checks, including "and" between dollars and cents. Negative numbers and decimals are handled cleanly with natural phrasing. A copy button grabs the result in one click. Useful for writing contracts, checks, legal documents, educational materials, and any context where numerals must appear as words. All processing runs in your browser.
