How to use Pomodoro Timer

  1. Configure your durations

Set the work session length (default 25 min), short break (5 min), and long break (15 min) in minutes. Choose how many work sessions trigger a long break.

  2. Start your first session

Click 'Start' to begin a work session. The circular progress ring fills as time passes, showing how much of the session remains.

  3. Take breaks automatically

When a work session ends, the timer switches to a short break. After the configured number of work sessions, a long break begins automatically.

  4. Track completed pomodoros

The session counter increments after each completed work session. Use Skip to jump to the next phase early, or Reset to start over.

  5. Listen for audio alerts

An audio beep plays when each phase finishes. Enable or disable audio in the settings if you need silence.

Pomodoro Timer FAQ

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

A time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo that alternates focused work sessions (typically 25 minutes) with short breaks (5 minutes). After 4 work sessions, a longer break of 15–30 minutes is taken. The technique helps maintain concentration and prevents burnout.

Why 25 minutes for a work session?

Francesco Cirillo found that 25 minutes was long enough to make meaningful progress on a task but short enough to maintain full focus. The specific duration is flexible — some people work better with 50-minute sessions and 10-minute breaks.

Can I change the default durations?

Yes. The work session, short break, and long break durations are all adjustable. You can also change how many work sessions occur before a long break triggers.

Does the timer advance automatically between phases?

Yes. When a work session ends, the break phase starts automatically after the audio alert. When the break ends, the next work session begins. You can also use Skip to advance manually.

Does it play a sound when the timer ends?

Yes. An audio beep plays when each phase finishes, provided the audio option is enabled and your browser permits it. You can toggle audio off in the settings for silent working.

Does the Pomodoro technique actually improve productivity?

Research supports time-boxing and regular breaks as effective for sustained concentration. The structured rhythm also makes tasks feel less overwhelming by breaking them into defined chunks. Individual results vary based on work type and personal style.

Does it work for studying?

Yes. The 25-minute work / 5-minute break rhythm works well for studying, writing, coding, and any focused cognitive work. The session counter helps track how much time you have invested.

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

The display may be throttled when the tab is in the background, but the timer recalculates from the actual elapsed time each tick. The audio alert plays when the phase ends regardless of whether the tab is active.

Is any data sent to a server?

No. The timer runs entirely in your browser. Session counts and settings are held in memory only and reset on page close.

Background

A full Pomodoro timer with configurable work sessions (default 25 minutes), short breaks (5 minutes), and long breaks (15 minutes). Set the number of work sessions before a long break triggers. A circular progress indicator shows time remaining at a glance. The timer automatically advances through work and break phases, tracks completed pomodoros in a session counter, and plays an audio notification when each phase ends. Start, pause, skip, and reset controls give full flexibility. Based on Francesco Cirillo's Pomodoro Technique — the 25/5 rhythm that helps maintain concentration, combat procrastination, and reduce mental fatigue over long work sessions. All settings and session counts are preserved during the session. No account, no installation, and no browser extension required.
