Sales Tax Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate VAT on a UK price?

Enter the pre-tax price, select 20% (the standard UK VAT rate), and choose 'Add tax to price'. The calculator shows the VAT amount and the total price including VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it?

Switch to 'Remove tax from price' mode, enter the VAT-inclusive total, and set the rate to 20%. The pre-tax price and VAT amount are shown separately.

What is the formula for removing tax from an inclusive price?

Pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate/100). For a £120 total at 20% VAT: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 pre-tax. Tax amount = £120 − £100 = £20.

Can I use this for US sales tax?

Yes. US sales tax is applied the same way — type any rate from 0% to 99%. US rates vary by state and locality (typically 4%–11%).

What rates are the presets for?

5% covers some US states and reduced UK VAT; 10% is Australian GST and some EU reduced rates; 15% covers New Zealand GST and some EU rates; 20% is standard UK VAT and some EU countries; 23% covers Ireland and Poland; 25% covers Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

Is my data sent anywhere?

Background

The Kordu Sales Tax Calculator works in two directions. Add tax mode takes a pre-tax price and a rate, and calculates the tax amount and final total. Remove tax mode takes a tax-inclusive price and extracts the pre-tax price and tax portion — useful when a receipt shows the total and you need to know what the tax was.

Quick-select buttons for common rates (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 23%, 25%) let you switch rates instantly. Type any rate directly for custom values.

Common uses: checking VAT on UK invoices (20%), calculating GST for Australian purchases (10%), verifying European VAT rates, working out sales tax for US purchases, and reverse-calculating tax from receipt totals.
