Tip Calculator FAQ

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15–20% is standard for table service; 18–25% for excellent service. In the UK, 10–15% is typical and sometimes included as a service charge. In many European countries, rounding up or leaving small change is the norm.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Convention varies. In the US, most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though some tip on the full total. This calculator lets you enter either figure — just be consistent.

How does rounding work?

Rounding up adjusts the total to the next whole number and recalculates the tip to match. Rounding down does the opposite. This keeps the per-person amount clean when splitting cash.

Can I split between more than two people?

Yes. You can split the bill between up to 50 people. Both the per-person total and per-person tip are shown.

What tip percentage is appropriate for different services?

Restaurants (sit-down): 15–20%. Bars: £1 per drink or 10–15%. Taxis: 10–15%. Hotel housekeeping: £1–3 per night. Hairdressers: 10–20%. Delivery: 10–15%, or a minimum flat amount.

Is tipping mandatory?

Tipping customs vary by country and culture. In the US it is strongly expected; in Japan it can be considered impolite. Check local customs when travelling.

What if the service charge is already included?

Many UK and European restaurants add a discretionary service charge (usually 10–12.5%). If it's listed on the bill, you have already tipped. You are not obligated to tip on top of it.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. All tip calculations happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
