D&D Stat Roller

Roll ability scores for D&D 5e characters using 4d6 drop lowest, 3d6 straight, standard array, or point buy. See individual dice, assign scores to abilities, and copy your stats.

How to use

  1. 1

    Choose a rolling method

Select one of four methods: 4d6 Drop Lowest (most popular), 3d6 Straight (old-school), Standard Array (fixed balanced set), or Point Buy (spend 27 points to customize scores 8–15).

  2. 2

    Roll or set your scores

For dice methods, click Roll to generate six ability scores. Each roll shows the individual dice and highlights which die was dropped. For Point Buy, use the +/− buttons to adjust each ability between 8 and 15 within the 27-point budget.

  3. 3

    Assign scores to abilities

Click a rolled score, then click an ability slot to assign it. Modifiers update automatically — for example, a 16 shows +3. Reassign or reset at any time.

  4. 4

    Copy and use your stats

Click Copy to get a formatted stat block (e.g., STR: 16 (+3)) ready to paste into a character sheet, VTT, or chat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4d6 drop lowest method?
You roll four six-sided dice and remove the lowest result, then sum the remaining three. This is repeated six times to generate one score per ability. It tends to produce above-average characters compared to 3d6, which is why it's the most popular method in D&D 5e.
Is point buy better than rolling?
It depends on your table's preference. Point buy gives every player an equally powerful character and eliminates luck, which some groups prefer for fairness. Rolling introduces randomness that can create memorable characters — both very strong and charmingly flawed.
Are the dice rolls truly random?
Yes. The tool uses your browser's crypto.getRandomValues API, the same cryptographic random number generator used for security applications. Every die face has an exactly equal probability.
Can I re-roll if I don't like my scores?
Absolutely. Click Re-roll as many times as you want. Some DMs set house rules about re-rolling at the table, but this tool has no limits — roll until you're happy.
What are ability modifiers?
A modifier is calculated as (score − 10) ÷ 2, rounded down. For example, a score of 14 gives a +2 modifier, and a score of 8 gives a −1 modifier. Modifiers are what you actually add to most dice rolls in gameplay.

Generate ability scores for your next Dungeons & Dragons character with

four official rolling methods. 4d6 Drop Lowest rolls four six-sided dice

and discards the lowest for each ability — the most popular method at

tables worldwide. 3d6 Straight rolls three dice per score for a grittier,

old-school feel. Standard Array gives the classic 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

spread for a balanced starting character. Point Buy lets you spend 27

points to customize each score between 8 and 15, following the 5e

Player's Handbook rules exactly.

Every roll shows individual dice so you can verify fairness — dropped

dice are clearly marked. Assign rolled scores to STR, DEX, CON, INT,

WIS, and CHA with a simple click interface, see modifiers update in

real time, and copy your final stat block as formatted text. All rolls

use cryptographically secure randomness via your browser — nothing is

sent to a server.
