DPS Calculator

Calculate base, effective, burst, and sustained DPS for any weapon. Enter damage, attack speed, crit chance, magazine size, and reload time. Compare two weapons side by side.

Base Damage × Attack Speed

Effective DPS (with crits)

Base DPS × (1 + Crit% / 100 × (Crit Mult − 1))

Burst DPS

Effective DPS (no reload downtime)

Enter base damage and attack speed to see DPS results.

All DPS formulas assume uniform crit probability across attacks. Sustained DPS requires magazine size and reload time. Burst DPS equals effective DPS — it represents peak output while firing without reload interruptions.

How to use DPS Calculator

  1. Enter base weapon stats

Type your weapon's base damage and attack speed (attacks per second) into the input fields. Base DPS and effective DPS results update live as you type.

  2. Add critical hit values

Enter your critical hit chance (0–100%) and critical hit multiplier (e.g. 2.0× for double damage on crits) to see effective DPS that averages crit damage across all attacks.

  3. Add magazine and reload stats

Optionally enter your magazine size and reload time in seconds to calculate sustained DPS and time-to-empty — the real-world average output across multiple magazine cycles.

  4. Compare two weapons

Toggle Compare Mode to add a second weapon loadout. Both sets of DPS metrics appear side by side so you can instantly see which weapon wins on burst, sustained, or effective DPS.

DPS Calculator FAQ

What is the difference between base DPS and effective DPS?

Base DPS is simply base damage × attack speed — it ignores critical hits. Effective DPS factors in your crit chance and multiplier to give the average damage per second you'll actually deal over many attacks. Effective DPS = Base Damage × Attack Speed × (1 + Crit Chance% / 100 × (Crit Multiplier − 1)).

What is the difference between burst DPS and sustained DPS?

Burst DPS is your effective DPS while actively firing with a full magazine — your peak damage rate. Sustained DPS accounts for reload downtime and gives your true average over multiple magazine cycles. In extended fights, sustained DPS is more important than burst.

What formula does the calculator use for effective DPS?

Effective DPS = Base Damage × Attack Speed × (1 + Crit Chance/100 × (Crit Multiplier − 1)). This averages crit damage across all shots. A 50% crit chance with 2× multiplier adds 50% to your average damage per shot.

How is sustained DPS calculated?

Sustained DPS = (Magazine Size × Effective Damage Per Shot) ÷ (Magazine Size ÷ Attack Speed + Reload Time). It divides total magazine damage by the full cycle time including reload, giving the real-world average output per second.

Why is my sustained DPS lower than burst DPS?

Sustained DPS always equals or falls below burst DPS because it includes reload downtime. The longer your reload relative to your firing time, the bigger the gap. Weapons with large magazines and fast reloads show the smallest difference between burst and sustained.

Can I use this for any game?

Yes. The formulas are universal DPS math applicable to any game with attack speed, critical hits, and magazine mechanics — FPS shooters, ARPGs like Diablo and Path of Exile, MOBAs, MMOs, and tabletop RPGs. Enter whichever stats your game exposes.

How do I factor in damage over time effects?

For DoT effects, calculate the damage per tick × ticks per second and add that to your base DPS before entering it into the calculator. Some ARPGs add DoT to effective DPS automatically — check your game's damage breakdown screen.

What is a good DPS for comparison?

DPS values are game-specific and scale with character level and item tiers. The compare mode is the most useful feature — it tells you which of two weapons is stronger relative to each other, regardless of the absolute numbers.

Background

Instantly calculate damage per second for any weapon, ability, or character loadout with visible formulas for every result. Enter base damage and attack speed to see base DPS, then add critical hit chance and multiplier to see effective DPS that accounts for your average crit contribution.

Add magazine size and reload time to unlock sustained DPS and time-to-empty — the metrics that matter most in extended engagements where reload downtime reduces your real-world output. Every result card displays the exact formula used so you can verify the math or apply it in spreadsheets.

Toggle compare mode to place two weapon loadouts side by side and see which wins on burst, sustained, or effective DPS. Works for any game with attack speed and crit mechanics — shooters, ARPGs, MOBAs, MMOs, and tabletop RPGs. All calculations run in your browser with zero latency and no sign-up required.
