How to use Volume & Surface Area Calculator

  1. Select a 3D shape

    Choose from cube, box, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid, triangular prism, hemisphere, or torus using the shape selector.

  2. Enter dimensions

    Fill in the labeled dimension fields for your chosen shape — radius, height, length, width, or slant height as required.

  3. Read volume and surface area

    Both values appear instantly with the formula used. Results update as you change any dimension.

  4. Convert to capacity units

    Toggle capacity mode to see the volume expressed in litres, millilitres, US gallons, and UK gallons.

Volume & Surface Area Calculator FAQ

What is the formula for the volume of a sphere?

V = (4/3) × π × r³, where r is the radius. Surface area = 4 × π × r².

What is the formula for the volume of a cylinder?

V = π × r² × h, where r is the radius and h is the height. Lateral surface area = 2πrh. Total surface area = 2πr² + 2πrh.

What is the formula for the volume of a cone?

V = (1/3) × π × r² × h. Lateral surface area = π × r × l, where l = √(r² + h²) is the slant height.

What is the formula for the volume of a cube?

V = s³, where s is the side length. Surface area = 6 × s².

What is the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism?

V = length × width × height. Surface area = 2(lw + lh + wh).

What is the volume of a pyramid?

V = (1/3) × base area × height. For a square pyramid: V = (1/3) × s² × h.

What 3D shapes are supported?

Cube, rectangular prism (box), sphere, cylinder, cone, square pyramid, triangular prism, hemisphere, and torus.

What is the difference between volume and surface area?

Volume measures the space inside a 3D shape (cubic units). Surface area measures the total area of its outer surface (square units).

Can I use this for real-world problems?

Yes. Capacity mode converts volume to litres and gallons — useful for tanks, pools, containers, and cooking measurements.

Is any data sent to a server?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Background

Select a 3D shape and enter its dimensions to instantly get both volume and surface area with the formula displayed. Shapes supported: cube, rectangular prism (box), sphere, cylinder, cone, square pyramid, triangular prism, hemisphere, and torus. Each shape clearly labels which dimensions are required — radius, height, slant height, base, etc. A capacity mode converts the calculated volume into practical units: litres, millilitres, US gallons, and UK gallons — useful for tanks, pools, and containers. Results update instantly as you type, making it easy to explore how changing one dimension affects volume and surface area. Useful for geometry homework, engineering design, construction, packaging, and science projects. All processing runs in your browser with no software required.
