How to use D&D Stat Roller

  1. Choose a rolling method

Select one of four methods: 4d6 Drop Lowest (most popular), 3d6 Straight (old-school), Standard Array (fixed balanced 15/14/13/12/10/8), or Point Buy (spend 27 points to set each ability between 8 and 15).

  2. Roll or configure your scores

For dice methods, click Roll to generate six ability scores. Each result shows individual dice with the dropped die clearly marked. For Point Buy, use the +/- buttons to distribute your 27 points across all six abilities.

  3. Assign scores to abilities

Click a rolled score, then click an ability slot (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, or CHA) to assign it. Modifiers calculate instantly — a 16 shows +3, an 8 shows -1. Reassign or reset at any time.

  4. Copy your stat block

Click Copy to get a formatted stat block ready to paste into a character sheet, D&D Beyond, Roll20, Foundry VTT, or any chat.

D&D Stat Roller FAQ

What is the 4d6 drop lowest method?

You roll four six-sided dice and remove the lowest result, then sum the remaining three. This is repeated six times — once per ability score. It tends to produce above-average characters compared to 3d6, which is why it's the default method recommended in the D&D 5e Player's Handbook.

What is standard array in D&D 5e?

Standard Array gives every character the same set of six scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8. You assign them to your abilities in any order. It's the fairest method for groups who want all characters to have equal power regardless of dice luck.

How does point buy work in D&D 5e?

You start with all abilities at 8 and spend 27 points to increase them. Scores from 8 to 13 cost 1 point each; 14 costs 2 additional points; 15 costs 3 additional points. No ability can go above 15 before racial bonuses with point buy.

Is rolling better than point buy?

It depends on your table's preference. Point buy ensures every player starts equally powerful and eliminates luck, which many groups prefer for competitive fairness. Rolling introduces randomness that creates memorable characters — both exceptionally strong and charmingly flawed.

Are the dice rolls truly random?

Yes. The tool uses your browser's crypto.getRandomValues API — the same cryptographic random number generator used for security applications. Every die face has an exactly equal 1-in-6 probability, unlike some tools that use Math.random().

What ability score modifiers are in D&D 5e?

Modifiers are calculated as (score − 10) ÷ 2, rounded down. A score of 10 gives +0, 12 gives +1, 14 gives +2, 16 gives +3, 18 gives +4. Modifiers are what you add to most d20 rolls — ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls.

Can I re-roll if I don't like my scores?

Yes. Click Re-roll as many times as you want. Some DMs set house rules about re-rolling, but this tool has no limits. Roll until you're happy with the result.

Does this work for Pathfinder or other TTRPGs?

The 4d6 drop lowest and 3d6 straight methods work in Pathfinder 1e and many other d20 systems. The standard array and point buy are specific to D&D 5e rules but the dice methods are universal.

What are the highest possible stats when rolling 4d6 drop lowest?

The theoretical maximum is 18 per ability (rolling four 6s and dropping the lowest). In practice, rolling six 18s has a probability of roughly 1 in 1.6 billion. Average score per ability with 4d6 drop lowest is about 12.24.

Background

Generate ability scores for your next Dungeons & Dragons 5e character using four official rolling methods — all in your browser with no account or downloads required.

4d6 Drop Lowest rolls four d6 and discards the lowest for each ability — the most popular method at tables worldwide, producing above-average characters. 3d6 Straight rolls three dice per score for a grittier, old-school feel. Standard Array gives the classic balanced spread of 15/14/13/12/10/8. Point Buy lets you spend 27 points to customize each score between 8 and 15, following the D&D 5e Player's Handbook exactly.

Every roll shows individual dice values with dropped dice clearly marked for transparency. Assign rolled scores to STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, and CHA with a click — modifiers update in real time using the standard (score − 10) ÷ 2 formula. Copy your final stat block as formatted text ready to paste into a character sheet, virtual tabletop, or chat. All rolls use crypto.getRandomValues for truly fair results.
