How to use Initiative Tracker

  1. Add all combatants

Enter each combatant's name and initiative roll. Optionally set HP and AC. Click Add or press Enter. Use the Roll d20 button for a quick random initiative value without leaving the tracker.

  2. Start combat

Combatants automatically sort by initiative (highest first). The first in the list is highlighted as the active turn. Click Next Turn to advance through the order.

  3. Track damage, healing, and conditions

Use the damage and heal controls next to each combatant to adjust HP in real time. Toggle D&D 5e condition badges — Stunned, Poisoned, Frightened, Blinded, and more — to track active status effects.

  4. Manage rounds

The round counter increments automatically when the last combatant in the order finishes their turn, cycling back to the top of initiative order for the next round.

  5. Save and resume the encounter

Click Save Encounter to store the combat state in your browser. Click Load Encounter at the start of your next session to resume with all HP, conditions, and turn order intact.

Initiative Tracker FAQ

How does initiative sorting work?

Combatants are automatically sorted from highest to lowest initiative value. Ties are broken alphabetically by name. The sort updates instantly whenever you add or edit a combatant's initiative value.

Can I track monsters and players in the same initiative order?

Yes. Add any mix of player characters, NPCs, and monsters. They all sort together by initiative value. Use the duplicate button to quickly add multiple copies of the same monster — each copy gets a numbered suffix (Goblin 1, Goblin 2) so you can tell them apart.

What D&D 5e conditions does the tracker support?

The tracker includes the most common 5e conditions: Poisoned, Stunned, Prone, Frightened, Blinded, Restrained, Paralyzed, and Charmed. Active conditions display as colored badges on each combatant so nothing gets overlooked during combat.

What happens when the last combatant finishes their turn?

Clicking Next Turn on the final combatant increments the round counter and moves the active turn back to the top of initiative order automatically. This continues for as many rounds as combat lasts.

Is my encounter data secure?

All data is stored in your browser's localStorage and never sent to any server. Clearing your browser data removes saved encounters — otherwise data persists between sessions on the same device and browser.

Can I use this for Pathfinder or other TTRPGs?

Yes. The conditions are labelled for D&D 5e, but the core features — initiative ordering, HP tracking, turn management, and round counting — work for any tabletop RPG with initiative-based combat: Pathfinder, Starfinder, and homebrew systems.

Is this a free alternative to Roll20 and D&D Beyond?

For initiative and HP tracking specifically, yes. This tool covers the core combat tracking workflow without a subscription or account. Roll20 and D&D Beyond have richer full VTT features (maps, character sheets, dice integration), but for a clean DM tracker this is faster and ad-free.

Can I add bonus HP for temporary hit points?

Use the Heal function to temporarily add HP above a character's maximum for temporary hit point tracking. The current version does not have a separate temp HP field — track it by adding to current HP and noting it in the combatant name.

Background

Run smoother D&D 5e combat encounters with this dedicated initiative tracker built for dungeon masters. Add players and monsters with their initiative rolls, hit points, and armor class — the tracker automatically sorts everyone by initiative order and highlights whose turn is active.

Use the built-in d20 roller for quick initiative rolls without reaching for dice. Track HP in real time with instant damage and healing controls so you always know who's still standing. Apply D&D 5e status conditions — Stunned, Poisoned, Frightened, Blinded, Prone, Restrained, Paralyzed, Charmed — as colored badges so nothing gets forgotten mid-combat.

Advance turns with one click; the round counter increments automatically when the last combatant finishes their turn. Duplicate combatants to quickly add multiple identical monsters, each with a numbered suffix. Save your encounter to localStorage and load it next session to pick up exactly where the party left off. A clean, fast alternative to Roll20 and DNDBeyond's combat tracker — no subscription required.
