BMP to JPG Converter FAQ

How much smaller will the JPG be compared to the BMP?

Typically 90–98% smaller, depending on quality settings and image content. A 20 MB BMP might compress to 500 KB or less at 85% quality.

Why are BMP files so large?

BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed format invented by Microsoft. Every pixel is stored individually with no compression, resulting in very large files. This makes BMP unsuitable for web use, sharing, or storage at scale.

Will I lose image quality converting to JPG?

JPG is a lossy format, so some quality is reduced. The quality slider controls this trade-off. At 92%+, the difference is imperceptible to most viewers. Use PNG instead if you need lossless output.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

Will transparency be preserved?

No. JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas in the BMP are filled with white. Use BMP to PNG if you need transparency preserved.

Can I convert multiple BMP files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple BMP files into the tool and all will be converted and downloadable as a batch.

Should I convert to JPG or PNG?

Use JPG for photographs where small file size matters. Use PNG for screenshots, diagrams, or images with text where lossless quality is important.

What quality setting should I use?

92% is a solid default. Use 95%+ for archival or print purposes. Use 75–85% for web thumbnails or email attachments where size is critical.

Can I use this tool on a phone?

Yes. The tool works on any modern mobile browser — iPhone Safari, Chrome for Android, and others.

Background

Convert BMP (Bitmap) images to compressed JPG format directly in your browser. BMP is an uncompressed Windows format — a single screenshot or scanned image can easily exceed 10–50 MB. JPG compression reduces those file sizes by 90–98% while preserving good visual quality, making files suitable for email, web publishing, and social media.

Use the quality slider to control the compression level. Higher quality settings (90–95%) produce near-original output at moderate size reductions. Lower settings (70–80%) shrink files aggressively for thumbnails and previews. Note that JPG does not support transparency — any transparent pixels in the BMP are filled with white.

Batch conversion is supported: drop multiple BMP files at once and download all the JPGs in a single click. All processing runs client-side using the Canvas API, so no data is ever sent to a server.
