What happens with animated GIFs?
Only the first frame of an animated GIF is extracted and converted to a static PNG. The animation is not preserved, as PNG is a static image format.

Is transparency preserved?
Yes. GIF transparency is converted to full PNG alpha transparency, which actually provides more transparency levels (256 levels) than GIF's binary (fully transparent or fully opaque) model.
